Looking to 2020…

As the weather warms, the turtle season begins to ramp up. The date for the spring sampling weekend has been set, May 15-17, 2020 (although it will obviously be contingent on where we are with the status of the Covid-19 pandemic in our area). I am looking forward to what we can accomplish this year. In addition to the normal sampling weekends in spring and fall, I plan to focus on trapping Alligator Snapping Turtles (Machrochelys temminckii) in the Cahaba River. To find the immature snappers we have found so far has been one of the more surprising aspects of the study, and I’m interested in finding more individuals. I am also looking at new sampling locations that would expand the footprint of the Urban Turtle Project.
